The case of D.R. Congo

Chinese aid is tied to trade, loan and investment agreements. It is given as concessional loans for turn key infrastructural projects like roads, dams and stadiums. A well known case is the multi billion dollar resource backed loans to DR Congo. The Congo-deal involved a 6 billion dollar agreement whereby 10 million tonnes of copper and 400,000 tonnes of cobalt are exchanged for 145 health clinics, 32 hospitals and schools, two hydro-electric dams, 3,300 km of road and 3,000 km of railway built by Chinese companies.
