Knowing Emerging Powers aims to increase the knowledge of civil society actors in the Netherlands/Europe, working on international development. The programme will enable civil society actors to develop effective strategies of engagement with emerging powers.
Emerging powers like China, India, Brazil and South Africa change the face of development as we know it. They play a crucial role in the management of international public goods. Engagement with emerging powers is a central challenge for civil society organizations working in Africa. By linking up with academic and civil society networks the knowledge programme provides a stimulating environment for learning. This will enable civil society organizations to rethink their strategy, identify new activities and design effective campaigns.
The engagement with emerging powers is one of the most important challenges for civil society actors in international development. Ian Taylor writes: “African civil society must play a crucial role in the new engagement with China. It is up to Africans to organise, connect and ensure that their leaders enter into relationships with Beijing with open eyes for the sake of mutual benefit” (2009, p. 183).
